Post is a great name for a newspaper, isn’t it? Post is a word that has
been around for a very long time, about 500 years, as best I can tell. We’ve
really gotten a lot of … mileage out of it… if you’ll pardon
the expression. Well, think about it.
Post, postal service, post-a-note, all have to do with communication. So does
the name for the newspaper. It evolved from the method of delivery of news.
It was only natural that a newspaper, carried by post, should be called “The
Post.”
Where did the word “post” come from? According to www.takeourwordforit.com
“The word “post” refers to the stations along the route and
is the English (1506) form of the Medieval Latin “postum” meaning
"station". The original Latin word was “positum,” which
comes from the verb “ponere, meaning "to put"
Post also has to do with a person’s station of duty, as in “leaving
your post.” Has the press left their post lately? Some people think the
press has been quite derelict in their duty to report impartially the goings-on
in our nation. It may be that everyone thinks that, even from opposite points
of view. I haven’t talked to anyone in years who feels that news is covering
things in any kind of objective fashion.
First, there is the issue of sensationalism. It may not be obvious. We’ve
gotten used to a steady diet of murder, malice and mayhem in our daily post.
Even our “human interest” stories tend to be more about suffering
that success. What’s that about?
I suppose no one can be really objective. The interest really lies in people’s
opinions and their differences. But doesn’t it begin to sound like the
same old same old all the time? When was the last time you read anything in
your local Post, by whatever name, that was fresh and original, that gave you
a feeling of being uplifted or inspired?
Send a letter to the editor of your post. Let them know what you think of how
they’re reporting about our world. Do a Google search if you don’t
know how to reach them. The Letters to the Editor page has contact information,
both online and in hard copy. Speak up, please! Maybe they’ll post it!
